Math 431... WHY LORD?!?! WHY?!?!

Granted, I'm a math minor. I like math, but it's not my forte.

But WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH MATH 431!!! I thought this class was gonna be a review of middle school and high school geometry and techniques on how to make math fun and engaging.  It's not that at all.

Granted, I think Professor Cap is cool. But all of this is pretty much going over my head and I'm not sure how it's gonna make me a better math teacher...

Your thoughts?

  1. aww hang in there Ingrid! It'll all be over soon. :) As to whether it'll make you a better instructor - all knowledge is worth having right? Maybe this frustrating class will help you better understand how hard math can for students and how frustrating it can be. Maybe give you ideas of how you can help your students channel that frustration into something productive? Or give you ideas of how to better approach some problems.

  2. Hey Tiffany,

Thanks for the reply :D Yes, I agree with everything you've said. However, I definitely know how hard math can be. I love math but it is not my forte. And I would appreciate this class a lot more if I weren't under so much pressure to pass all my other classes, teach my kids well, get enough sleep and stay in good health.

But like you said... it'll all be over soon so... SCREW IT! lol

But then again, this attitude that I have "let's just get it over with" is what I think is wrong with the education system in general... People don't understand why they're learning this material and how it will help them in the future. I hope to NOT be that type of teacher.

  3. Ingrid, you've probably already done this, but before the experience fades in memory, you might say something to Charlie, Deanna, or Pat. It is important that they hear about issues related classes such as this one, which is required, so that they can think about possible alternatives. This may not be a case where they have a lot of wiggle room, but I know that the program has tried to be flexible where it can, even offering different options.
